Sailor's Creek Plans Earth Day Event

Volunteers are needed to assist with the next phase of Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Landscape Restoration. On Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. park staff will be planting in observance of Earth Day.

According to maps from the 1865 era, this portion of the battlefield was heavily forested. Over the years the forest was cleared for farmland use and then abandoned with scrub brush and wild grass taking over. In conjunction with the Department of Forestry, Sailor’s Creek will be planting pine and hardwood saplings, the types of trees present during the fighting that took place April 6, 1865.

Volunteers will be provided with pizza and beverages for lunch, and plenty of water while working in the field. Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes. Sun block, bug spray and work gloves will be provided by the park. Volunteers should meet at the Battlefield’s Visitor Center parking lot. (This project is weather dependant and will be re-scheduled at a future time to be determined, if necessary).
