Southside Virginia's economic history was built on the “Three T's”-Timber, Textiles, and Tobacco.

Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park will feature a public program on one of the “T's”-tobacco-on Sunday, August 26, at 2 p.m. at the park visitor center.

The program will feature dark leaf tobacco agriculture by Park Ranger Ken Townsend, also a Charlotte County farmer, who also will discuss tobacco cultivation on the Hillsman Farm, a prominent American Civil War landmark at Sailor's Creek.

While learning about the Southside past, visitors will enjoy Ice cream sundaes, served for the fourth straight Sunday in August, at $2 per person. Seconds are free, as long as it lasts.

So, bring your lawn chair and your curiosity, and beat the heat at Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park with air conditioning, ice cream, and learn all you ever wanted to know about the famous cash crop of Southside Virginia: tobacco.
