Longwood's SHLS Offers Free Hearing/Speech Screenings

Published 3:49 pm Tuesday, May 13, 2014

Longwood University’s Speech, Hearing and Learning Services (SHLS) will offer free hearing and speech-language screenings Wednesday, May 21, from 8-10 a.m., 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m.

The screenings for children and adults will take place at SHLS offices at 315 W. Third St. in Farmville. Appointments can be made by calling 434-395-2972. Walk-ins are welcome as well.

The screenings are being held in conjunction with Better Hearing and Speech Month. SHLS encourages parents to educate themselves about speech disorders through the Identify the Signs campaign (identifythesigns.org), a national effort by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Unlike many other disabilities, speech disorders, which affect 8-9 percent of young children, often are reversible and even preventable with early intervention.
