The Friends of the Appomattox River conducted their last field trip for the year on Oct. 20. Eight members and guests enjoyed a spectacular trip along a section of the Appomattox River that took them under High Bridge. The group obtained permission from property owners along the river to put in below Farmville and take out below the ruins of the old Jamestown Bridge. They spent three hours on the water enjoying the beautiful fall weather and colorful foliage. At least three flocks of Wood Ducks were spotted along with Green Herons and Red Headed Woodpeckers. The highlight of the trip was the opportunity to paddle under High Bridge. The bridge spans 2,400 feet across the Appomattox River Valley at a height of 125 feet above the river.
