The Longwood University Police Department is urging students to be cautious of emails they may have received asking if they want to earn $300.

According to Longwood Assistant Vice President of Communications Matt McWilliams, several students received emails asking them to deposit checks in return for cash.

McWilliams said there had “not been very many checks turned into the police department but that there were a few.”

“We have blocked the sender and others like them that were sending these emails,” McWilliams said. “We are making sure we are responding to this in an effective way and as quickly as possible.”

Students are advised to not respond to emails asking for money in any way nor to give out any personal information.

According to the Longwood University Police Department, the checks that students have received look “very real.”

Any student who has received one of these checks as a result of answering a scam email is advised to take the check to the Longwood University Police Department.
