Trents Mill News: It’s time to go marching into spring

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Well here we are again, another month has flown by and we’re heading into March. Did you know March used to be the start of our calendar each year? This was a while ago, back before America was a country. The early Romans started the calendar in March and ended in December, which was harvest time for that part of the world.

Then we all switched to the calendar style we use now, what some people call the Gregorian calendar, in 1752. It was only then that the calendar started on Jan. 1.

Speaking of time, we’re about at that point to set clocks ahead. Are you ready to lose an hour of sleep? Eastern Standard Time ends and Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. So don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour (spring forward) before going to bed the night before. There’s an argument that this allows us to use natural daylight better, as moving clocks forward one hour in the spring gives more daylight during summer. At the same time, moving it back in the fall gives us more daylight in the winter.

Now that’s not all happening this coming Sunday. The Appomattox County Athletic Booster Club will hold a bluegrass gospel singing featuring Williamson Branch this weekend. That’ll be Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Appomattox County High School Auditorium, located at 198 Evergreen Ave.

Tickets in advance will be $20, $25 at the door. Children 5 and under get in free. Now where can you buy tickets? Good question. That can be done in Appomattox at Wilkes Jewelers or Jamerson Building Supply, in Farmville at Taylor Forbes Equipment Co., in Dillwyn at Fisher Auto Parts, in Cumberland at Buggy Top and in Lynchburg at McBride Blackburn Opticians. If you’re making out a check please make it payable to Appomattox Bluegrass and Mail to C / O Tony Clifton P.O. Box 373 Appomattox Va. 24522 or buy online at www.lynchburgtickets.com. For more information call Tony at 434-660-1701.

Meanwhile, one day before that, the Buckingham County Christian Fellowship Association will meet. That’ll take place on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 1 p.m., at Fork Union Baptist Church. The church is located at 4745 James Madison Highway.

All members are asked to attend and bring a covered dish for the meal. Barbara Kritzer from Fork Union will be giving the program. For more information, contact President Barry Miles at 434-315-4181.

And finally this month, just a reminder that Sunday, March 31, is Easter Sunday. This is the day in which we recognize the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Yes, he is alive forevermore.
