The holidays are a time to gather together and give to others. The Southside Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has two events the first weekend of December to do just that.

The SPCA works year-round as a no-kill animal shelter and helps share the load with local shelters. Right now, animal shelters across the country are filling up alarmingly fast. As a no-kill shelter, the SPCA does its best to save as many dogs and cats as it can as many shelters that do euthanize are unfortunately having to make that choice.

“It’s important for us to raise funds because the price of everything has gone up,” said Steve Smelcer, a member of the SPCA board of directors. “The cost of running a no-kill shelter is very high.”

To help do this mission, there are two opportunities for the community to help the SPCA and enjoy time together.

First, the Holiday Gala will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Fireman’s Sports Arena in Farmville. The gala will have a live and silent auction as well as a photo booth, music by Joker, heavy hors d’oeuvres by Ernest Toney and an open bar sponsored by Tito’s Vodka. Tickets for the night will be $50 per person and only those 21 years or older can attend.

After the gala, the SPCA has plans for the whole family to enjoy. From noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, the Southside SPCA Holiday Donation Drive will be at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Farmville. There will be another silent auction, raffles, photo opportunities with Santa, holiday themed Puppy Love Shirts for sale and some special guests. Dogs are also welcome at this free event as long as they are friendly and leashed.

One of the special guests is Pit Boss Shorty Rossi from Animal Planetaas he will return as the keynote speaker. Capt. Greg Mayer from National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna will also give a presentation.

“We have a wishlist for items people can donate,” said Steve Smelcer. “This started as a donation drive, but now it’s more of an event we do for the community.”
