APPOMATTOX — Nearly seven years ago Sue Cochrane, then a volunteer at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, worked with the park on a grassroots effort to create a Friends Group to help the park with projects and programs.
“She worked closely with park staff to create a ‘board’ of volunteers that turned this idea into a reality,” officials said in a press release. “The Appomattox 1865 Foundation achieved nonprofit status in March 2012 and has been providing significant support for the park in many areas ever since.”
Cochrane began serving as the president of the foundation in 2015 and led many efforts to support the park for the 150th anniversary commemoration. On Jan. 1, Eileen Huffman, current board member and English instructor at Central Virginia Community College, began her tenure as president. Linda Mays continues to serve as vice president.
