LaRue earns spot at Men’s Golf Regional

Justin LaRue made history for Longwood men’s golf this season, and now the junior is headed to the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.

LaRue earned the spot on the strength of his individual ranking, No. 213 in the nation, and will head to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as announced on the NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday afternoon. The regional will be Monday to Wednesday, May 13-15 at the Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill.

He will compete as an individual for a chance to advance to NCAA National Championship stroke play.

For the Lancers, LaRue becomes the first golfer to earn an individual selection based on ranking since Niklas Jansson and Carl Magnusson in the 2001 season.

LaRue became the first Lancer golfer to earn multiple Big South honors, as he was named the Big South Golfer of the Year. He also was an All-Big South First Team selection after leading the Big South in scoring average and top 10 finishes.

This year, he finished in the top 10 in all nine tournaments in the regular season, and his scoring average of 69.83 was the only one under 70 in the Big South. He also helped the Lancers post their best average team score in team history at 288.97.

He finished first or tied for first in two events this season, winning the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate outright with a seven-stroke win. His 54-hole score of 203 was the lowest three-round score in team history. He followed it up by tying for first at the Irish Creek Collegiate two weeks later.

All in all, LaRue notched 23 rounds under par in 29 rounds of golf, and he had six of the team’s 11 lowest rounds of the season.
