Barbara Herrmann, 71 Master Gardener Dies Friday

JANUARY 20 – Barbara Lee Strickler Herrmann, 71, of Farmville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, January 16, 2003.

She was born October 10, 1932 in Washington DC.

She is survived by her husband, John A. Herrmann; two sons, Van Strickler and wife, Janis of Virginia Beach and Dale Strickler of Farmville; two daughters. Sandy Henderson of Meherrin and Millie Strickler and husband, Harry Swisher of Lexington; two stepsons, John A. Herrmann, Jr. and wife, Kathy of Smithfield and Fred Herrmann of Virginia Beach; two stepdaughters, Cathy Herrmann Dean and husband, Ken of Montreal, Canada and Laura Merrell and husband, Joe of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, James and Jareth Strickler of Chesapeake and Katie Strickler of Virginia Beach; a sister, Elaine Cross and husband, Claude of Charleston, SC; a brother, Karl Franke of Silver Spring, MD and her constant companions, her loving puppies, Barney, Sam and Puddln. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tommy Henderson.

Mrs. Herrmann was a retired paralegal in Westfield, NJ before moving to Farmville in 1995. She was a very active and respected member of the community, president of the Farmville Woman's Club from 2000-2002, a certified Master Gardener and president of the Garden Study Club from 1998-1999. She was a representative to the Town and Country Beautification Council and participated In many civic activities associated to this. She was a member of the South Central Fiber Artists' Guild for six years, where she was vice president, reporter and instructor.

She was very active at St. Theresa Catholic Church, where she was a parishioner, a member of the Altar Guild, chairman of the Parish Events Committee and International dinners.

A memorial service will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church on Saturday, January 24 at 1:30 p.m. interment will be held Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Westvlew Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church Building Fund, 709 Buffalo Street, Farmville, VA 23901, or the Farmville Woman's Club, Attn. Marilyn Philbrook, 3908 Abilene Road, Farmville, VA 23901, for the purpose of their charitable donations.

Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, is in charge of arrangements.
