Mabel Dunkum Wilkerson, 87, of Farmville, died peacefully on April 14 at Tyler’s Retreat in Chester, VA. She was born in New Canton, VA in Buckingham County on July 29, 1932. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mabel Dunkum, husband Steven Wilkerson, son Kent Wilkerson, brothers Julian and James Dunkum, sister Marjorie, sister-in-law Joyce Dunkum, and stepmother Clarice. She is survived by a son Daniel Wilkerson, daughter-in-law Vanessa, six grandchildren, Chris, Casey, Katherine, Sarah, James and Stephanie, six great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Mary Dunkum, friends William and Christine Clark and a host of nieces and nephews. Mabel also leaves behind her many friends at the Farmville United Methodist Church.

Born and raised in New Canton, Mabel moved to Farmville in 1950 where she met and married Steve in 1952, a marriage that lasted 39 years until his death in 1991. Mabel was a long time clerk at Baldwin’s department store. After retirement, she spent many happy hours with her fellow church members knitting and exercising. Mabel’s devotion to family and faith set a standard for all to aspire towards.

A private family service will be held at a future date. Remembrances can be made to the Farmville United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
