Art through the (youthful) ages

Artwork from young artists, pre-K-12, lined the walls of the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) on Sunday afternoon, drawing scores of families to the opening day of the annual Area Youth Art Exhibition.
The exhibition will remain open through April 14.

As Sunday’s event neared its conclusion, LCVA Director of Education & Outreach Emily Grabiec said she could not be happier with how it went.
“I think this was a great crowd,” she said. “We had lots of different ages come, and I think the exhibition’s one of our largest that we’ve ever had, so we’re really excited about it. We had 12 counties, and even a borough from Alaska participated.”
Included in the 12 counties are Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward.
Grabiec elaborated on how the North Star Borough of Alaska came to be represented.
“Our school program’s educator, Mindy Pierson, her grandchildren live in Alaska, and so they submitted, so we even have representation from Alaska,” Grabiec said.
She noted that the Area Youth Art Exhibition is a longstanding event, hosted for about the last 18 years by the LCVA.
Highlighting how the exhibition benefits the community, she said, “It brings so much of the community to the LCVA to see THEIR artwork on display.”
