BUCKINGHAM – If your new year's resolutions involve getting more exercise, the Buckingham County Department of Recreation is ready to lend a helping hand. Here's a rundown of some of the programs available. For more information and/or registration, call (434)969-4242.
Men's Basketball: Registration is underway and will be open through early January for anyone interested in playing in the men's basketball league.
Adult Co-Ed Volleyball will begin on Monday, January 14, at 6 p.m., in the Nazarene Camp Gymnasium, which is located across from the Buckingham County Middle School on High School Road.
Anyone age 16 or older is welcome to join in for the fun and physical activity this sport offers.
Children's Gymnastics is a program for children ages three through 14 (based on age prior to December 1).
Class concentrates on instruction in floor exercise, balance beam, and basic tumbling.
Sessions begin on February 5, and will be held at 6, 6:40, and 7:20 p.m., one to two days per week for six-weeks. Students will be grouped based on age and skill level.
Parents will be notified for starting date and time after all registration forms are submitted.
Registration forms must be submitted by Friday, February 1. Fee is $40. Please note that these classes fill quickly so do not delay if you are interested in enrolling your child.
Classes will be held at the Nazarene Camp, located off High School Road, across from Buckingham County Middle School.
Karate Program: This year-round program offers classes on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Buckingham Agricultural Center, located next to the County Administration Complex on Route 60.
Karate offers an opportunity to become motivated, acquire discipline, and learn self-defense while building confidence and character.
Instructed by James Walker, this class is open to children and adults-ages four and up. Cost is $38 per month.
Hatha Yoga: Another year-round program offered is Hatha Yoga, instructed by Hope Mell.
Yoga focuses on postures, relaxation, breath control, and mental concentration while improving flexibility, strength, and balance. Participants are asked to wear loose-fitting clothing that does not restrict movement; and, bring a yoga mat, large towel, or blanket to class.
Day classes are offered on Wednesday's from 12:30 to 2:15 p.m.; and, night classes are held on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. Cost is $30 for four consecutive sessions or $40 for six consecutive sessions. Classes are held in the Agricultural Center.
One of the most successful programs offered through the Buckingham County Department of Recreation is the Buckingham Active Seniors.
Open to Buckingham residents who are 50 and up, this organization offers monthly meetings, special programs, trips and tours, fundraising events, camaraderie, and lots of FUN.
Although the group usually meets at 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the VFW Hall on Route 60, this month's meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 22, at 1 p.m. The change was necessitated because of renovation work at the VFW Hall.
The January 22 meeting will include making plans for a fun-filled and exciting year. Whether you are a current member or a prospective member, why not check out what BAS has in store for you in 2013.

District 4 Supervisor John Staton and District 2 Supervisor Donnie Bryan are hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, January 17, 7 p.m., in the Peter Francisco Auditorium located in the new Buckingham County Administration Building.
Staton emphasized that this meeting is open to all citizens, regardless of their district. He stressed that although he represents District 4, Maysville, as a member of the board of supervisors he serves all county residents.
According to Staton, he and Bryan will offer an overview of the board's work during 2012 and discuss issues facing the board in 2013. They will also open the floor to questions, concerns, and comments.
Straight Street-Buckingham will hold a school supply distribution on Saturday, January 19, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Straight Street building on Route 20.
Basic school supplies will be available to those who need assistance. Persons interested in receiving supplies during this distribution are encouraged to contact Michelle at 983-1745. Please leave your name and the number of children needing basic school supplies.
On Sunday, January 20, at 3 p.m., First Liberty Baptist Church will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Observance.
The Reverend Joseph Patterson, associate minister of Petersville Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker. The Petersville Baptist Church Choir will accompany him.
Focusing on Philippians 2:1-4, this year's theme is Have the Attitude of Christ While Serving Others.
After the service, the fellowship will continue with a meal.
Each year, First Liberty honors Dr. King by reaching out into the community and recognizing individuals, organizations, and agencies that are making a difference in the lives of others.
This year, First Liberty will again reach out to Buckingham County High School by presenting a monetary donation to help with fees and supplies as well as motivational opportunities for its students.
First Liberty Baptist Church is located at 1995 Rock Mill Road, Route 633, off Route 640 and Route 15.

The Buckingham County Youth League will hold its annual meeting on Sunday, January 27, 2 p.m., at the Peter Francisco Auditorium located in the new Buckingham County Administration Complex on Route 60.
This independent community organization oversees baseball, softball, cheerleading, football, and basketball programs for youth ages five to 19.
Volunteers are needed to help with the planning, organizing, coaching, and numerous other duties involved in providing these activities for the youth of Buckingham.
Board members encourage you to get involved and attend this annual organizational meeting. And, the youth of Buckingham are depending on you to do just that.
As a fundraiser for the construction of its Youth Play Zone, Ellis Acres Memorial Park is offering sturdy and well-built picnic tables. The cost is $250 per table.
Each table comes with a two-year warranty covering materials and workmanship. Table specifications include a family-size table, 96 by 35 inches, constructed with treated lumber and galvanized hardware.

Anyone interested in learning about beekeeping or those who are currently working on their own to raise bees but would like to be on the receiving end of more information are invited to participate in an upcoming Beekeeping Workshop Series held on the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m., in the Buckingham Agricultural Auditorium.
On January 16, there will be an introduction to Beekeeping and Building a Hive. On February 20, the focus will be on Establishing Hives for Proper Honey Flow; and on March 20, the workshop will provide information about the Environmental and Seasonal Changes for Bee Hives.
For April, plans include a hands-on workshop about Working a Hive.

All Buckingham students in third through fifth grades are invited to participate in the 4-H Chemistry Challenge, planned for Fridays, January 18 and 25, and February 1 and 8, at Central Virginia Christian School, located in the county's industrial park.
The 4-H Chemistry Challenge offers a series of sessions designed to engage students in the science of chemistry.
During the sessions, students will conduct experiments like the Great Ketchup Caper, Goofy Putty, and Fountain of Soda.

Here's one for the youngest 4-H'ers, ages five through eight.
Winter Cloverbud Mini-Camp at the Holiday Lake 4-H Center is scheduled for February 23 and 24. Cost for Early Bird Registration (prior to January25) is $55; regular registration is $65.
This is a great way to introduce youngsters to 4-H camp and activities.
The Central Virginia Humane Society-SPCA is on the receiving end of a grant from the Jessica Beath Foundation to help provide spay and neuter services for dogs and cats at $10 each through February 28.

Likewise, if you would like to volunteer to help with this effort, give her a call. Volunteers are needed to help care for the animals the night before their surgery; assist with transporting the animals to the Ashland-area clinic, and helping with the post-op care upon their return.
With efforts such as this spay and neuter program, the Central Virginia Humane Society and SPCA hopes to make it more affordable for pet owners to provide their animals with the care they need.
In addition to the spay and neuter program, Dr. Powell Anderson is available at the shelter from 12 noon to 2 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday to administer vaccinations to dogs and cats. DHPP and DHLPPC vaccinations are $5; FVRCP and FVRCPC vaccinations are $8; and rabies vaccinations are $8.
Although the Central Virginia Humane Society-SPCA is unable to accept animals at the shelter at this time, they are looking for volunteers, including those willing to foster rescued animals at their homes. The Central Virginia Humane Society-SPCA is located off Route 20 at the Beath Animal Shelter, 899 Buffalo Road, Route 631.
So now that the Christmas decorations are on their way to the attic, what's next? Would you believe it's already time to GET READY for the Arts and Crafts Exhibit sponsored annually by the Woman's Club of Buckingham County?
All artists and crafters are invited to participate. The exhibit offers categories for all types of art including watercolors, oils, drawing, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and pottery. Crafts encompass needlework, quilting sewing, jewelry, woodworking and more.
Each year, the WCBC invites and encourages the community and area schools to join with them to highlight the talent abounding in Buckingham.
Entries will be accepted on Saturday, February 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Buckingham Arts Center, located on Route 60 next to the county administration complex.
An Open House Reception featuring all of the entries and honoring the artists and artisans is planned for Sunday, February 24, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Arts Center.
