FARMVILLE — Every active player on Longwood's roster made a contribution that helped the team in a positive manner and the result was the first win of the season for the Lancers, 63-59, over Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon inside Willett Hall.

“This is a very special win,” said head coach Bill Reinson. “It took contributions from everyone on the team to get it done.”

Junior Raven Williams led the way with 19 points, as the Lancers had three players finish in double figures. The performance from Williams was her fifth straight game with 16 or more points and second consecutive contest with 19 points. In addition, the junior from Richmond posted four assists along with five steals and two rebounds.

“I always say that I'll do whatever it takes to help my team win,” Williams said. “Today, we were all pumped up and ready to go and we just kept fighting until the end. Even when they took the lead late in the second half, we just kept fighting and refused to quit.”

In addition, Kyndal Skersick finished with 14 points off the bench and Deborah Headen notched 12 points.

“Raven played great,” Reinson said. “Kyndal made a huge three-point shot at the end. Deb [Headen] stepped up and made important free throws to seal it. Emily [Nylen] had three blocks and a couple of buckets. Autumn [Childress] and Shannon [Mosby] each had five rebounds. It truly was a team victory”

Down by one point with less than three minutes to play, Longwood (1-11, 1-2) scored the game's final five points and held the Runnin' Bulldogs scoreless to solidify the victory. A Skersick three gave the Lancers the lead for good, 61-59, before Deborah Headen sealed the win with two free throws with 11 seconds to play.

“Honestly, I didn't feel any pressure,” Headen said of her two free throws to seal the victory. “I knew I had to make them to help us extend the lead. It was a great win for our team.”

Williams has averaged 14.6 points per game throughout her last 10 games after starting the season with just two combined points in the team's first two games. Throughout her last five contests, the Richmond product has averaged 17.6 points. In addition, Williams has recorded three or more assists eight times in her last 10 games.

Longwood, who came into the game leading the Big South with 5.73 treys per game, matched its season-high with 10 three-pointers. Five players on the roster hit at least one three-point field goal. Throughout the second half, the Lancers hit 13-of-28 (.464) shots from the field to post their second-highest field-goal percentage in a single half this season.

Meanwhile, the Lancers played their best defensive game guarding the three, holding Gardner-Webb (4-8, 0-3) to 1-of-10 (.100) shooting from beyond the arc.

Gardner-Webb's Jessica Heilig led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

“We talked about playing with more heart and closing the game at the end to not letting this game get away from us,” Skersick said.

The win for Longwood snaps a 13-game losing streak dating back to last season and a four-game skid inside Willett Hall.

The Lancers will not have much time to reflect on the win, but will look to build upon it with their final game of the 2014 portion of their schedule at Winthrop Tuesday, December 30. The game from Rock Hill, SC, is set to begin at 7 p.m.
