Residents of Cumberland County will have an opportunity to hear from all seven candidates running for Cumberland Circuit Court Clerk during a forum Tuesday.

The forum, sponsored by the Republican and Democratic Committees, is set to take place at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland Middle and High Schools Cafetorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

“Our goal is to offer a program that gives candidates an opportunity to introduce themselves, explain their platforms to constituents, and offer a time for the public to ask questions,” documentation from the committees cited.

Sarah Kate Spry, the former circuit court clerk, retired at the end of April.

According to Marlene Watson, registrar, Deputy Clerk Deidre D. Martin, George L. “Lee” Dowdy III, Eurika V. Tyree, Susan Goodman Carden, Rodney A. Davenport, Mildred A. “Midge” Owens and Lundy H. “L.H.” Morgan are currently in the running for the position. Watson said having this many candidates running for this position has been unusual for the county.

During the forum, the moderator will provide five minutes for each candidate to introduce themselves that include information such as their background or history with the Cumberland community, their relevant experience that could be useful in this position, goals or plans for the circuit court clerk office and what makes this candidate stand out from others.

Following their introduction, there will be a question and answer period for the candidates.

Cards will be available for constituents to write questions for the candidates to address during the question and answer period of the program.

Information on the county political committees and voter registration material from the County Registrar’s office will be available.

Candidates and members of the public will have the opportunity to interact before and following the forum.

The program ends at 8 p.m.
