Sign of love in Meherrin

Whenever the Ortiz family traveled and saw the large LOVE signs that frequent Virginia, they thought about bringing a sign of their own to Meherrin.

In June, Tammie, Tyger, and their son Amirious decided to construct a sign of their own, just off their front yard.

Virginia LOVE signs, made from everything from kayaks, to bales of hay, to metal, wood and plastic, dot the state. Virginia.org, the official tourism website for the Commonwealth of Virginia has photos and directions to more than 100 LOVE signs throughout the state, including the LOVE sign in the Town of Farmville by the town’s High Bridge Trail entrance.

The Ortiz family saw support from community businesses and organizations such as Bryant’s Heating and Air Meherrin Fire & Rescue, which is set to display an emblem on the sign.

Tammie and Tyger said they have had motorists stop by the sign and take photos.

The family used 2 by 10-foot boards of painted lumber and refurbished a wagon wheel, made gold by spray paint.

The sign, in celebration of Independence Day, had United States flags around the sign and red, white and blue lights that illuminate the sign at night.
