As the 2018 season approaches for Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) men’s soccer team, a visit with 2009 graduate Jason Butler puts a spotlight on a former Tiger star and some of the success populating the program’s history.

Butler was a four-year soccer student-athlete at Hampden-Sydney. He played in 62 career games with 55 starts as a center midfielder while accumulating seven goals and 13 assists.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HAMPDEN-SYDNEY?

“I chose H-SC because of the strong academic history, the opportunity to play soccer at the collegiate level and to be an immediate contributor to the program.”

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST MEMORIES AT H-SC?

“I could go on all day, but obviously soccer and the overall sense of community shared among students, teammates and faculty will always come to mind. Athletically, I will remember being part of the first recruited class under Coach Josh Laux and leading the team to an 11-win season, earning the No. 2 seed in the ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Tournament in 2007.”

HOW HAS H-SC HELPED YOU IN YOUR LIFE AFTER COLLEGE?

“H-SC provided me with a well-rounded education and strong foundation in leadership, ethics, written/verbal communication and integrity that I use, and will continue to use, in each business or personal relationship.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CURRENT H-SC MEN’S SOCCER TEAM?

“First off, cherish your time on the hill! One day you will find yourself nine years out of H-SC, like me, wondering where the time went. Also, approach each day with a positive attitude and view each day as an opportunity to better yourself from an athletic, academic and personal standpoint. Last but not least, bring home the ODAC Title … We are due!!”
