A Buckingham County All-Star squad full of 13- and 14-year-old players gained some important experience in preparation for its upcoming state tournament by taking on the older competition of the 2018 Dixie Boys 15U State Tournament in Charlotte Court House over the weekend.

Buckingham went 0-3 against the older age division, but Manager Kelby Wharam was pleased with what he saw from his boys as they faced 15- and 16-year-old players.

“We gave it our best shot,” he said. “They did great. I can’t complain whatsoever. Errors got us, but we’re going to fix that the next two weeks.”

Buckingham will play in the 2018 Dixie Boys 13- and 14-year-old State Tournament in Franklin County starting July 13.

In pool play this past weekend, Buckingham fell in lopsided fashion to the Halifax County All-Stars and the Carroll County All-Stars, but in its single-elimination game Saturday evening, Buckingham took the Bedford All-Stars a full seven innings before falling 11-3.

Wharam said his boys played well for the first three innings of the first two games and expanded that to the first six innings in the final contest.
