Edgar Knapp resigned Nov. 6 as head coach of the Cumberland County High School varsity football team.

“This year didn’t go the way anybody planned it to, and it’s just probably better for the program to find somebody else to take over the program at this point,” he said Nov. 8.

His resignation came in advance of the Dukes’ Region 1B first-round playoff game against host Central Lunenburg High School that took place Nov. 10.

Cumberland Athletic Director Alfonso Bell had been named as the interim head coach for the playoff game.

With a 56-20 playoff loss to the Chargers, the Dukes finished the 2017 season with an 0-11 record.

Knapp was in his third year with the team this season, having taken the reins of the program in 2015. Cumberland went 2-7 in 2015 and 1-9 in an injury-riddled 2016 season.

Though wins were scarce during his tenure, Knapp helped spearhead some positive developments for Dukes football.

“We got the (junior varsity) program back up and running this year,” he said. “Last year, we won the statewide sportsmanship award, so a lot of things are going where it’s supposed to go, and I hope it’ll continue to progress like that for whoever takes over.”

Knapp came to Cumberland with seven years of coaching experience in Henrico County at Deep Run High School. There he led undefeated teams as head coach of the junior varsity (JV) squad and head coach of the freshman squad. He later served as assistant head coach of the varsity team.

He confirmed he is looking for opportunities to continue his coaching career somewhere for the 2018 season.

Meanwhile, he will continue his teaching duties at Cumberland, where he is under contract until the end of the school year.
