CUMBERLAND — Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, instituted by a program providing prosecutors, law enforcement and citizens an opportunity to work together to combat the growing opioid crisis. Opioids include illegal drugs such as heroin as well as prescription medications used to treat pain. As part of Take Back Day, citizens are encouraged to take expired or unused prescription medications to local collection sites for disposal.

In Cumberland, Commonwealth’s Attorney Pat Scales wants area citizens to get involved and take their unused or unneeded medications to local collection sites for safe disposal.

“Getting old or expired medications out of your house for safe disposal is doing what you can to ensure your meds don’t fall into the wrong hands,” Scales said.

In Cumberland, the Prescription Drug Take Back collection site is the Cumberland Sheriff’s Office where the drug disposal box is located just inside the door. Cumberland Sheriff Darrell Hodges said his agency’s lobby is open 24/7, and the public can drop off unused medications whenever they like, even after Take Back Day is over.
