Area sees festival winners

The Five County Fair at the end of September had several area ribbon winners. Mary Lee Dimmie won first on her cherry tomato, second on cornbread, third on white potato and third on sunflower. John Dimmie won first on his muffins and second on banana bread.

Debbie Mount won first on red zinnia, second on pink zinnia and participation ribbons for purple petunia, any zinnia and her flower arrangement “By the Sea.”

Children from the Guinea neighborhood showing their dairy and beef calves and cows at the fair were Bridget, Brooke, Harold and Henry Landis, Kelly Womack, Caroline Seal and Lottie May Hazlegrove.

In the Holstein Show, Bridget and Harold each placed first with their Summer Calf and Winter Yearling. Bridget won Grand Champion with her Aged Cow. Kelly Womack placed first with her Senior Yearling, and her Junior Calf also went on to take the Reserve Champion title later in the show. Caroline Seal placed first with her Senior Calf and 3-year-old Dry Cow. Henry took first with his Jersey Winter Calf, and Brooke took the Grand Champion title with her Aged Jersey Cow.

In the Beef Show, Kelly won first and Grand Champion with her Finished Steer and first with her Feeder Steer. Caroline placed second with her Junior Yearling and second with her Junior Calf. Lottie Mae placed first with her Spring Junior Hereford Heifer and first with her Senior Yearling Hereford Heifer. She won Grand Champion in the Hereford Division with her Senior Yearling and Reserve Champion with her Spring Junior Heifer.

Kelly Womack and Lottie Mae Hazlegrove along with Lydia Hazlegrove and Carly Hazlegrove all entered various crops in the fair, and all the children earned first, second and third place ribbons with their corn, hay, silage, small grains and hams.

Sympathy is extended to the Schember family in the death of Michael’s father, Paul Schember Sr., in Ocala, Florida. They attended his memorial service in Clinton, Iowa. Sympathy is also extended to the family of George Perkins.

Jo Smith has returned from a visit with relatives in Lexington, Kentucky. While there she had an opportunity to visit the Ark and also a nearby Shaker Village.

Area farmers have been busy harvesting their soybean crop but are still awaiting a good soaking rain.

A spaghetti supper will be held at Randolph District Fire House on Nov. 10 in honor of area veterans. The menu will also include a salad, bread, dessert and beverage for a donation.
