The Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity has selected five new partner families to build with in 2018 — two of the families being from Prince Edward County, two being from Buckingham County and one being from Cumberland County.

According to Habitat Community Outreach Director Sam Rabon, the application period ended in July.

“The first of these builds should have the groundbreaking ceremony in early December, with construction set to start in January,” Rabon said.

He said fundraising is currently a major focus in order to build the homes.

“Once the home is complete and the family moves in, they will pay an affordable mortgage, including property taxes and homeowner’s insurance,” Rabon said. “But prior to that, the cost of construction must be raised for each build.”

He said the Pig Roast Fundraiser, set to be held Saturday in the Gee-Price Activity Center at Fuqua School from 5-8 p.m., serves as the kick-off for the season of fundraising.

“Every dollar given helps these families move one step closer to building their dream,” Rabon said.

According to Rabon, Habitat worked with five partner families that they had been building with this year.

“A build in Dillwyn was completed in May,” Rabon said. “A family moved into a newly-rehabilitated home in Charlotte Court House in July.”

He said a family in Farmville will be moving into their home within a few weeks.

“Another home rehabilitation is underway in Dillwyn and will be done over the next month,” Rabon said. “Likewise, construction on a new home has begun in Cumberland and should be complete in the next few months.”
