Buckingham County High School’s varsity football team entered its contest Friday night in Nottoway County looking to sustain the momentum it had established the week prior when it achieved its first win of the season, but the Knights did not execute well enough on offense to come away with another victory.

The host Nottoway County High School Cougars held Buckingham scoreless and went on to win 21-0, but for most of the night, the game was far closer than the final score implies.

“It was 7-0 in the fourth quarter,” Knights Head Coach Josh Wallace said. “… We turned the ball over.”

He noted that for the game, Buckingham had three fumbles.

“It didn’t help us,” he said.

Instead, it helped Nottoway achieve its first victory of the season. The Cougars improved to 1-3, a mark that is not a good indicator of their overall strength, as their three losses came against opponents that are a combined 12-1.

The Knights (1-4) were aiming for their third win in a row against Nottoway after having won 46-33 last year and 40-8 in 2015.

“We had opportunities,” Wallace said. “We’ve got to find a sense of urgency and figure out a way to get it done.”

This Friday at 7 p.m., Buckingham will host one of the Cougars’ opponents from earlier this season — Goochland High School (4-0).
