BEREAVEMENT WORKSHOP, 5:30-6:30 p.m. sponsored by New Century Hospice at 201 N. Main St., third floor. The theme for the workshop is “Writing to Heal Grief” and will focus on expressive and creative writing techniques to help cope with loss. BAKED POTATO DINNER, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department, 2145 Cumberland Road. The dinner will include baked potatoes with toppings of butter, sour cream, bacon bits, chili, cheese and broccoli. Salad, desserts and drinks will be included. Please donate at the door to support the fire department.

CABIN FILM SERIES, 7 p.m. The event, which will be hosted at the Longwood Cabin, is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Prior to the screening, Dr. Chris McGee, an associate professor in the English and Modern Language Department at Longwood University, will lead a discussion on the conventions of this particular style of horror film. “The Cabin in the Woods” is a part of the cult film series hosted by the LCVA at the Longwood Cabin. Campfire-themed refreshments will be served.

ST. PATRICK’S DANCE, 8 p.m. hosted by the Cumberland Fire Department Auxiliary at the firehouse on Route 13 (Old Buckingham Road) in Cumberland. Cost will be $10 per person and everyone attending must be at least 21 years old. Soft drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY CELEBRATION, to benefit the Buckingham County Library new building fund. The event will take place at the Buckingham County VFW Hall, 14405 W. James Anderson Hwy. from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Ticket price includes beer or wine, non-alcoholic beverages and pub snacks. Cost is $30 per ticket of two for $50. HIKE UNDER THE BRIDGE, 1 p.m. Meet Park Ranger Bob Flippen on the east end of High Bridge near the fort and at the intersection with Camp Paradise Trail. Total distance is about one mile. NATURE SCAVENGER HUNT, 1-2:30 p.m., at Jamestown Presbyterian, 1571 Lockett Road, Rice. The hunt is free for everyone. Following the hunt a presentation about Full Circle Nature School will be offered to parents who wish to hear more about the new school. A drawing will be held for prizes. One winner will receive free tuition to the Full Circle Summer Camp held June 26-30. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

TRAIL OPEN HOUSE, 2-5 p.m. sponsored by Appomattox Court House National Historic Park. The trail open house will feature activities for all ages to promote the new Healthy Parks Healthy People Partnership with neighboring Virginia State Parks. Meet park staff at the North Carolina Monument Parking lot located on Route 24 within the grounds of the park. Parking will be available there and in the grass around the parking lot.

PIEDMONT AREA VETERANS COUNCIL, Meetings will be held at the Thomas Hardy Graham VFW Post 7059 located in Farmville. Both the board meeting and regular meeting will be held on the third Monday of every month. The Community Engagement Meeting, open to the public, will be at 9 a.m. The PAVC Board Meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. immediately after the Community Engagement Meeting.

FARMVILLE/PE HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO MEET, 7 p.m. in the Historic Farmville Train Station, 510 W. Third St., Farmville. The speaker will be lifelong Farmville resident Jimmy Hurt, who will share information he has researched on Farmville’s three Airports and the Farmville School of Aeronautics. The Town of Farmville has had three airports. The oldest airport was located west of Farmville near Industrial Park Road. Guests are always welcome.

COMMUNITY FORUM, 2:30-5 p.m.,  by the Virginia Legal Aid Society Inc. (VLAS), including citizens who would like to be involved in a community forum where residents can share their ideas on the most important civil legal needs of their community. The event will take place at South Street Conference Center, 122 South St., Farmville. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free, and reservations are not required.

ADVENTURES IN NOH, 6 p.m., Longwood Center for the Visual Arts. Refreshments will be served before the program, which is free and open to the public. 

LENTEN SERVICES/LUNCHEONS, noon-1 p.m. at Payne Memorial United Methodist Church. The theme this year is “Tiny Faith-Awesome Grace.” The speaker will be the Rev. Cameron Cloud and the topic is Extreme Faith. The lunch will be provided by members of the congregation. The church is located at 1 Stoney Point Road in Cumberland (across from the courthouse).

CIVIL WAR CONVERSATION, 6:30 p.m. The American Civil War Museum (ACWM) welcomes Virginia Tech’s Dr. Paul Quigley for a Civil War Conversation about Americans’ varied attitudes toward the Fourth of July, at the Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox. FARMERS MARKET FOOD SAFETY, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension at the Southern Piedmont AREC located at 2375 Darvills Road, Blackstone. Topics covered in this one-day workshop include worker health and hygiene, water quality, animals/wildlife/livestock concerns, manures/compost, soils, rules/regulations and understanding GAPS/Produce Safety Rule. Participants will develop skills to assess where food contamination may occur and steps to mitigate those concerns. The workshop will also include a demonstration on farmer’s market vendor presentations and set-up. POND MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP, 1-4:30 p.m. sponsored by VCE. The workshop will begin at the Cumberland Extension Office with a wrap up visit to a pond about two miles from the office. The fee is $5 per person and can be paid on the day of the event.

BOATER SAFETY CERTIFICATE CLASS, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Central Virginia Community College’s Appomattox Center. The class is appropriate for anyone age 10 or older. A certificate is required for anyone operating a 10 horsepower or higher boat in Virginia. No charge for the class but you must pre-register at www.register-ed.com. Bring lunch. COMMENT MEETING, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., to help submit your comments about the Atlantic Coast Pipeline Draft Environmental Impact Statement to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, South Central Counseling Group, 1046 Main St., Dillwyn. Volunteers will guide you through the process of submitting your comments. Sponsored by the Friends of Buckingham.

CLEAN-UP, 9 a.m. The Friends of the Appomattox River (FAR) have coordinated a clean-up of rivers and lakes resulting in a removal of more than 10,000 pounds of trash, tires and random objects. This year, the Spring Waterways Cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m.-noon.
