Memorial Day Service is Monday

The 26th annual Buckingham County Memorial Day Service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. on the courthouse lawn on U.S. Route 60. The event, which will honor those who have served, is sponsored by the American Legion Post 134, the Buckingham County Ruritan Club and VFW Post 8446. The rain location of the event is the VFW Hall, located on U.S. Route 60 east of the courthouse.

The American Legion Post 134 will be giving away flags on Saturday, from 9 a.m.-noon at Lucky’s, located on U.S. Route 15 north of Sprouse’s Corner, 11791 W. James Anderson Highway, Dillwyn.

The Rev. Donnie W. Brown, pastor, and the New Hope Baptist Church family invite you to be a part of their workshop on “Knowing and Using Your Spiritual Gifts in the Body of Christ.” The workshop will be held Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., and is to help individuals understand spiritual gifts and their importance within the church. Facilitator for the workshop will be the Rev. Dr. Earl L. Pendleton, assistant pastor Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church in Charlottesville.

The church is located at 1909 Cartersville Road in Buckingham.

There will be a Fifth Sunday Night Sing at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, at 6 p.m., presented by the Old Time Gospel Singers. Refreshments will be served after the song service and a love offering will be taken. All are welcome. Chestnut Grove is located at the intersection of Francisco and Chestnut Grove Church roads in Buckingham.

Don’t feel like cooking for Memorial Day? Curdsville Community Center, 122 School Road (just off of U.S. Route 15 South) will offer a fried chicken dinner and dessert auction, Monday, from 5-7 p.m. Donations are requested at the door with takeout available for $8 a plate. Ready for summer, garden work, the grandkids and vacation? Buckingham County’s Park and Recreation Department offers a weekly yoga class Wednesdays from 12:15-2:00 p.m. at the old County Ag building near Buckingham Court House on Route 60. Yoga can give your body a boost as you develop strength and flexibility. Proper movement is an excellent way to learn pain-free living. The instructor, Hope Mell, is a movement specialist trained in many aspects of yoga, yoga therapy and Alexander technique.

The Friends of the Library are pleased to announce the results of successful fundraising that took place at the recent MayFest. More than $600 was raised for the new library in Buckingham and more people joined the ranks of the friends as well.

The winners of the basket raffle were: Wanda Cerritos (dog basket); Pam Fortune (garden basket); LaShaunda Glover (bath and body basket); Rosalyn Koontz (cat basket and wine basket); Janice Johnson (wine basket) and Amy White (wine basket). Thanks to all who participated in efforts to bring the new library closer to becoming reality.
