LYNCHBURG — Attorney Mark Peake has announced his candidacy to seek the Republican nomination for the 22nd State Senate District.

Peake, of Lynchburg, unsuccessfully sought the nomination in 2011, losing to State Sen. Tom Garrett, R-Buckingham, who has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District seat.

U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt, a Republican, announced in December that he would not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The 22nd State Senate District encompasses Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward counties.

According to a press release, Peake formerly served as chairman of the Lynchburg Republican Committee and is “well-known in Republican circles across the commonwealth.”

Peake calls himself a commonsense social and fiscal conservative.

In his announcement, Peake said that he’s already raised nearly $25,000 for his campaign.

“Should … Garrett win in November, a special election would be scheduled to elect a member of the State Senate to succeed Garrett in time for the 2017 General Assembly,” he said.
