The Redbud Garden Club met on Nov. 17 at the home of Ann Ligon with Joyce Thompson as co-hostess. Members enjoyed goodies along with hot apple cider before the meeting. There were 15 members and a guest present.

Speaker for the evening was Katy Overby, Prince Edward County Extension Horticulture agent, who gave a program on “Arranging for Christmas.” Overby suggested making use of what you have around the house using landscaping resources.

She advised gathering leaves, twigs, berries, nuts, evergreens, beans, fruit, plumes, cones, rocks, seeds and water. Other supplies needed are wire, scissors/wire cutters, candles, twine/ribbon, fabric, burlap, flowers, glue gun and oasis.

Overby showed pictures of things she has done to decorate.

To dress up daffodils, tie burlap around the vase and put a ribbon around it. She has done several bridal bouquets using things around outside.

For a centerpiece she used a silver platter, put a grape vine with a candle in the center and put berries and/or pine cones around the vines.

Mrs. Overby stated that there is an anatomy of arranging: plan a color scheme; structure with oasis or grids of tape; texture using fine, course, or variance; insure longevity by using a clean container, cold water, aspirin, and sugar; and change water every three days.

She brought several examples of her designs. She demonstrated getting a tall, clear vase and putting cedar branches in it upside down to give the clear vase a different look.

Geraldine Sanderson reported that several members went to the Violet Banks Garden Presentation that Sid and Rochette Allen presented at Colonial Heights on Nov. 11. It was well attended and a great presentation.
