BUCKINGHAM — Virginia State Police continue to investigate a crash in Buckingham that resulted in a 48-year-old Scottsville man sustaining life-threatening injuries.

Police say Otis L. Hackett Jr. was injured when he crashed his truck after allegedly fleeing from a State Trooper on Oct. 17 on Route 601.

“Shortly before 11:30 p.m., Oct. 17. … Virginia State Police Trooper G.T. Lee was following up on a citizen’s complaint about a reckless driver, when he located the suspect vehicle, a 1987 GMC V1500 pickup truck, backing up and off of Route 655,” said State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

She said when the trooper activated his emergency lights, the GMC pickup truck refused to stop and sped off away from the trooper continuing down Route 655 and then onto Route 601.

“As the GMC attempted to flee from the trooper, it ran off the right side of Route 601 and struck a tree. The impact of the crash caused the GMC to catch fire. Trooper Lee immediately responded to the vehicle and was able to put out the fire with his fire extinguisher. He then rendered aid to the driver … until medical personnel arrived on scene,” Geller said.

According to police, Hackett was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. “He was not wearing a seatbelt,” she said.

Virginia State Police Trooper J.H. Madding Jr. is investigating the crash, according to Geller.
