Behind a hat trick from Alyssa Chillano and three assists from Morgan Bitting, No. 5 Duke dispatched Longwood field hockey 7-0 and handed the Lancers their first shutout of the season Sunday evening on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Chillano scored on three of her five shots to help the Blue Devils (8-3) silence a Longwood team that entered the matchup winners of three of their past four games. Duke’s defense held the Lancers without a shot on goal the entire game, allowing goalkeepers Lauren Blazing and Kelsey Wagner to split a save-free shutout that was Duke’s second consecutive clean sheet.

Led by Chillano’s hat trick and four more goals from Hunter Bracale, Amanda Kim, Ashley Kristen and Heather Morris, Duke put 19 shots on Longwood’s goal for the most the Lancers have faced since James Madison launched 28 in the season opener on Aug. 30.

Longwood keepers Lauren Bernard and Katie Wyman combined for 10 of Longwood’s 12 total saves, but Duke’s high-powered attack yielded three goals in the first 10 minutes of play.

Hunter Bracale started the scoring just 3:34 into the game, fielding a loose ball at the top of the arc and launching it past Bernard to give the Blue Devils a lead they would never relinquish. Chillano followed fewer than three minutes later with a penalty corner goal, and Duke scoring leader Kristen hit another in the 10th minute to extend the lead to 3-0.

Chillano picked up another goal before halftime, that one coming off another penalty corner play that was one of 14 corner attempts by the Blue Devils on the day.

Duke turned four of those penalty corners into goals, including their last two scores of the game. Bitting inserted those two to stopper Christy Palazzese, who set them up for Chillano and Morris to score back-to-back in the 58th and 60th minutes.

The loss derails Longwood’s two-game non-conference winning streak and preempts another top-five showdown for the Lancers against No. 3 North Carolina Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C. That game tips off at 5 p.m.
