TEXAS, Dec. 30 – Rick Darnell was born on April 26, 1929 to mother, Otis Denby, of Galveston, TX. He was called to his Heavenly home on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2008 due to an illness.

He was of Catholic denomination and understood and adhered to the importance of having good faith. He was very generous with his resources and continually gave to multiple charities, business and individuals.

Rick Darnell was most noted for being a great songwriter penning hits for the likes of Billie Holiday, Steve Bassett, and most known for writing the hit song “The Thrill Is Gone”, originally sang by blues legend B. B. King, amongst a host of other artists. His passion and love for working in the radio business and recording studio continued up until his illness.

Rick was joined in holy matrimony on February 13, 1980 to Lula Mae Cockran who survives him in death.

Rick leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Lula Mae Darnell; three daughters, Alicia Marie Darnell, Tanya Renee Rachels and Pearlina Cockran; four granddaughters, Victoria Elizabeth Cockran, Andrea Renee Rachels, Alivia Marie Rachels, and Aliyah Marie Rachels; one sister-in-law, Andre Rachels; cousin, Cornett of Houston, TX; and a host of other relatives and friends.
