PE Ends Tough Non-District Stretch

The schedule got no easier for the Prince Edward County High School football team last week, as the Eagles wrapped up non-district play with a 40-12 loss at Powhatan.

Playing their fourth game in a month-long gauntlet that included Buckingham, Rustburg and Liberty Christian, the Eagles played their best game of the stretch at Powhatan.

“We made too many mistakes in a game where we couldn't afford to make any,” said PECHS head coach James Ford. “Powhatan a few fumbles too, but they did a better job of making our mistakes hurt.

“It's been a rough schedule, and we've been plugging along and trying to get better. Hopefully, we will begin to see if or how much we've improved from here on out.”

Prince Edward, which has had trouble moving the ball for the last couple of weeks, did get some improvement, as quarterback Cleon Watkins was 8-26 for 122 yards with a touchdown, but threw five interceptions. Watkins rushed ten times for 81 yards. Jakeem Eddins had nine rushes for 43 yards and scored a touchdown.

Watkins' favorite target, Marquis Fitzgerald had six catches for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Tequan Banks had the other two grabs for 16 yards.

Senior Isaiah Davis had his best game of the season with 14 tackles and a sack on the evening. Damien Mickey had five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Dontrel Allen had eight stops.

The good news for the Eagles is that the tough non-district portion of its schedule is over. Now starts the tough district portion, as they travel to defending champ Park View, a team that has shown to be the class of the field in the Southside.

“They've beaten two district teams in non-district games by a combined score of 94-6 over the last two weeks,” said Ford. “They're the top of the district right now, and they're playing like it. For us, it's a new chance – a clean slate – and an opportunity for us to still have a very successful season. The biggest thing is that we've got to eliminate our mistakes.”
