As I was listening to the WFLO morning show earlier this week, I heard Francis Wood say that it was the 267th day of the year with 98 days remaining in the year 2012. I thought to myself that that had to be a mistake. But fall has arrived and before long we will start to feel the change in the weather,
And, of course, unless you have been wearing blinders, you couldn't miss all the retail establishments' Halloween, Thanksgiving and even Christmas displays. Wal-Mart even has ToyLand underway in the Year 'Round shop.
And all the political signs are another sure sign that November is just around the corner. Many of you may remember that it was this week in 1960 that the very first televised presidential debate in history occurred when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon squared off in Chicago. Now, there seems to be non-stop debate going on.
On Sep. 14, Violet Thackston's niece, Marcia Templeton, took Violet for lunch and a visit with Winifred Howard in Pamplin. They enjoyed reminiscing about old friends and fun times together.
The ladies at the Methodist Churches would like to thank all of you for your support of their “Give-Away” Day and food sale on Sept. 15. The food sale was very successful and will go a long way to provide help to members of our community who need some assistance.
The Abilene Homemakers Club met Sept. 18 at the Abilene Community Center. We started working on decorating bags to fill with candy for the children at the Piedmont Juvenile Detention Center. This is one of our community outreach projects each year. On Sept. 27, I delivered cookies made by Faye Nelson to the Center for the children to enjoy. If you have any childrens/teens books or jigsaw puzzles that you would like to donate to the Center for the children, it would be much appreciated. If you get them to me, I will be happy to deliver them.
On Sept. 21, the Mylum family all met in Richmond at the home of Jackie Mylum (Duke Mylum's wife) to celebrate a couple of family birthdays including Jinny Mylum Cleveland.
On Saturday, Sep. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes will hold their First Annual Fall Bazaar at the Brookneal campus. There will be crafts and food for sale, an auction, Classic Car show, and many other activities. Everyone is invited to attend.
On Tuesday, Oct. 2, the Cardinal Quilt Guild of Prince Edward will hold their meeting at 10 a.m. at the Douglas Presbyterian Church. We would love to have you join us. You do not have to be an expert quilter to enjoy this group.
We are happy that Jean and Shyrl Marston continue to improve from injuries suffered in a car crash a few weeks ago.
And also happy to hear that Bernie Kemp of Darlington Heights continues to improve from injuries suffered in an accident in July.
Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Fred and Heather Catron who will celebrate on October 2.
Happy birthday wishes are extended to Ellen Catron who will celebrate on Oct. 6; Bob Bissett on Oct. 7; and Madeline Slaydon on Oct. 7.
