FARMVILLE – What do George Allen, Jamie Radtke, Bob Marshal and E. W. Jackson have in common?

Quite a bit, actually, but most significantly is the fact they will all share the ballot in a primary on Tuesday that will be ignored by more than 90 percent of registered voters in the area.

The Republican Party is holding the primary to elect a candidate to carry the GOP standard into battle against Democrat Tim Kaine for the United States Senate.

Allen is regarded as the prohibitive favorite to emerge triumphant and turn the November election into a face-off between two former Virginia governors.

That contest would very much catch the attention of voters in Virginia but also political pundits and politicians nationwide as part of the presidential election dynamic and its effect on party control of Congress.

But until then most Virginians are expected to be doing something else on Tuesday when polls open at 6 a.m., when they close at 7 p.m. and for the 13 hours in between.

The primary is open to all voters. There will be no party loyalty oaths to speak or sign.

And no write-in votes allowed.

As of Tuesday, Prince Edward County voter registrar Dale Bolt had received nine absentee ballots, an indicator of voter interest, during the previous 45 days, and six of those came in this wee-that indicates a paucity of voter interest.

Bolt said he expects five to six percent turnout of registered voters on Tuesday, leaving 95 percent of the voters looking elsewhere for things to do that day.

No new voter ID requirements will be in effect on Tuesday.
