Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, the Kappa Rho Omega Chapter of Farmville and Lambda Delta Chapter of Longwood University, initiated the Youth Leadership Institute (AKA YLI) in partnership with the Fresh Girlz Club. It is a youth led and interactive leadership program designed to promote healthy independence and personal empowerment for youth ages 11-13.
At the core of the YLI program is the learning by doing approach through youth led meetings, shared roles and responsibilities, decision making, community service, environmental projects and a final presentation.
The participants were trained to lead with knowledge, confidence and sound principles, how to make good life choices and how to become productive citizens and leaders. The monthly workshops included a variety of topics such as social and life skills, goal setting, etiquette, health and grooming, and career exploration. Other activities also included the creation of vision boards, developing business plans and meal planning on a budget. Attending cultural and social events were also included in the activities of the program.
