Cumberland Education Foundation gives out scholarships

On Wednesday, May 1 at 6 p.m., the Cumberland Education Foundation (Cumberland County Public Schools Foundation, Inc.) awarded scholarships to the graduating class as well as former graduates of Cumberland County High School in the cafetorium, following dinner.

This year, the Foundation has given 60 scholarships to 30 students (16 college students and 14 high school students) for a total of $48,050, the group’s highest total ever.

To date, the Foundation has given a total of $152,734 in Teacher Grants and $575,000 in scholarships to Cumberland High School graduates. That puts the grand total of Foundation giving at $728,000.

“We continue to pick up several personal scholarships from local family members who enjoy recognizing what the educational system has meant to them or a family member,” said Foundation member Bruce Robinson. “We thank our largest annual donor, Green Ridge Recycling and Disposal Facility, giving the foundation a total of $60,000 stipulating that we award $12,000 per year.”

COLLEGE STUDENTS RECEIVING SCHOLARSHIPS

• Calvin Foster has received an Eldridge Sanderson Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 represented by John Sanderson, a Friends of Brandy Knoll Scholarship for $500 represented by Linda Lineweaver, and a Penny Taylor Scholarship for $1,000 represented by board member Jeffrey Scales for a total of $2,500. He is currently enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in Business.

• Munirah Fulani has received a Cumberland Clothes Closet scholarship for $1,000 represented by Barbara Daniels and a Pediatrics Therapies Book Scholarship for $300 for a total of $1,300. She is currently enrolled at VCU in their Registered Nursing program.

• Lillian McConkey has received the Colonial Pipeline Scholarship for $1,000 represented by Megan Allen and a Luck Stone Book Scholarship for $250 for a total of $1,250. She is currently enrolled at Radford University majoring in Psychology.

• Allie Hurt has received a Cartersville Ruritan Club Scholarship for $1,000 represented by Deidre Martin and a Cumberland Clothes Closet Scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $2,000. She is currently enrolled at Mary Baldwin University majoring in Psychology.

• Ebony Arauz Tellez has received a Green Ridge Scholarship for $1,000 and a Women and Minorities in STEM Scholarship for $400 represented by BreAnne Woodson for Mary Larson, the donor, for a total of $1,400. She is currently enrolled at Longwood University majoring in Biology.

• Marwell Arauz Tellez has received a Green Ridge Scholarship for $1,000 and the English Language Learner Scholarship for $400 represented by BreAnne Woodson for Mary Larson, the donor, for a total of $1,400. He is currently enrolled at the College of William and Mary majoring in Business.

• Kaliyah Braxton has received a Green Ridge Scholarship for $1000 and a Buggy Top Book Scholarship for $250 for a total of $1,250. She is currently enrolled at Eastern Mennonite University majoring in Liberal Studies.

• Jack Williamson has received a Green Ridge Scholarship for $1,000 and a JGC Services Book Scholarship for $250 represented by Joe Robinson for a total of $1,250. He is currently enrolled at VCU majoring in Engineering.

• Nolanda Henderson has received a Green Ridge Scholarship for $1,000 and an Austin Spread Love Scholarship for $500 represented by board member Beverly Hill for a total of $1,500. She is currently enrolled at Roanoke College majoring in Criminal Justice.

• Mark Patterson has received a Cumberland Clothes Closet Scholarship for $1,000. He is currently enrolled at Old Dominion University majoring in Speech Pathology.

• Shelia Robinson has received a Cumberland Clothes Closet Scholarship for $1,000 represented by Vertie Mae Jamerson and a Juanita Urban, Joanne Macleay and Nellie Glenn Book Scholarship for $250 represented by Kathleen Mahoney for a total of $1,250. She currently attends VCU majoring in Business. 

• Micah Kinney has received a Green Ridge Scholarship for $1,000 and a Mercury Book Scholarship for $500 represented by board member, Victoria Kinney, his mom, for a total of $1,500. He is currently attending VCU majoring in Engineering

• Mark Tuttle has received a Green Ridge Scholarship for $1,000 and a Richard Bauer Scholarship for $500 represented by board member Patricia Scales for a total of $1,500. He is currently enrolled at Piedmont Virginia Community College majoring in Engineering.

• Kyler Gilliam has received a Sanderson Spread Love Scholarship for $1,000 represented by Bill Sanderson and an Austin Spread Love Scholarship for $500 represented by board member, Patricia Scales for a total of $1,500. He is currently enrolled at VCU majoring in Journalism.

• Chelsea Moorefield has received the Lineweaver Family Scholarship for $1,000 represented by board member, Linda Lineweaver and a Cumberland Clothes Closet Scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $2,000. She is currently enrolled at Longwood University majoring in Nursing.

• Hannah Layne has received the David C. Goodman Memorial Scholarship for $2,000 represented by Susan Carden. Hannah is currently enrolled at VCU majoring in English.

CUMBERLAND HIGH STUDENTS RECEIVING SCHOLARSHIPS 

• A Green Ridge scholarship for $1,000 has been awarded to Kallie Norwood. Kallie has a 3.176 GPA and plans to attend Piedmont University in Georgia, majoring in Exercise Science.

• A Green Ridge scholarship for $1,000 has been awarded to Kaleb Leach. Kaleb has a 3.52 GPA and plans to attend James Madison University.

• A William and Ada Sanderson Memorial scholarship for $1,000 and a Woman’s Club of Cumberland Book scholarship for $200 has been awarded to Aidan Daniels for a total of $1,200. Representing the Sanderson scholarship is John Sanderson and the Woman’s Club scholarship is Linda Lineweaver. Aidan has a GPA of 3.35 and plans to major in Fashion at Radford University.

• A Green Ridge scholarship for $1,000 and a Jaunita Urban, Joanne Macleay and Nellie Glenn Book scholarship for $250 for a total of $1,250 has been awarded to Egypt Anderson. She has a GPA of 3.1 and plans to major in Education. 

• A Cumberland Clothes Closet scholarship for $1,000 and a Jaunita Urban, Joanne Macleay and Nellie Glenn Book scholarship for $250 for a total of $1,250 has been awarded to Jada Brown. She has a GPA of 4.09 and plans to major in Nursing at VCU. 

• A Cumberland Clothes Closet scholarship for $1,000 and a Jaunita Urban, Joanne Macleay and Nellie Glenn Book scholarship for $250 for a total of $1,250 has been awarded to Levi Dayton. Levi has a GPA of 4.14 and plans to attend Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in Art. 

• A Letter Press Communications scholarship for $1,000 and The Cumberland Coffee Company scholarship for $500 for a total of $1,500 has been awarded to Ammaarah Fulani. Ammaarah has a GPA of 3.57 plans to attend a 4 year college majoring in Graphic Design. Representing the Letter Press and Coffee Company scholarships is board member, Linda Lineweaver. 

• A Cumberland Clothes Closet scholarship for $1,000, a Jaunita Urban, Joanne Macleay and Nellie Glenn Book scholarship for $250 and a Fleming Family Book scholarship for $250 for a total of $1,500 has been awarded to Melanie Anderson. Melanie has a GPA of 3.9 and plans to attend Radford University to study Forensic Psychology. 

• A Cheryl Dalton Memorial scholarship for $1,000 and a Cumberland Clothes Closet scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $2,000 is awarded to Mackenzie Vance. She has a 4.12 GPA and plans to attend Longwood University majoring in Nursing. Representing the Dalton scholarship is Jesse Barker, her son and Brianna Barker, her granddaughter.

• An Elizabeth W. Dawson Memorial scholarship for $1,000 and a William and Ada Sanderson Memorial scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $2,000 is being awarded to Shalaina Baker. She has a 2.76 GPA and plans to attend either Bowie State University or Virginia Union University majoring in Business Administration. Representing the Dawson scholarship is Mary Jackson and representing the Sanderson scholarship is Betty Sanderson.

• The Thomas Chapel scholarship for $1,000 and a Green Ridge scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $2,000 is being awarded to Bella Johnson. Bella has a GPA of 4.38 and plans to attend the University of Virginia at Wise majoring in Nursing. The Thomas Chapel scholarship is being represented by Beverly Hill.

• An Elizabeth W. Dawson Memorial scholarship for $1,000 and a Green Ridge scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $2,000 is being awarded to Jamyra Vick. She has a 4.3 GPA and plans to attend Howard University majoring in Physical Therapy. 

• A William and Ada Sanderson Memorial scholarship for $1,000 and a Sonny Merryman scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $2,000 has been awarded to Juan Lopez. He has a GPA of 4.1, plans to enroll at Roanoke College majoring in Business. The Sonny Merryman scholarship is being represented by board member Linda Lineweaver.

• The Eric L. Robinson Memorial scholarship for $1,500, a William and Ada Sanderson scholarship for $1,000 and a Cumberland Clothes Closet scholarship for $1,000 for a total of $3,500 is being awarded to Emma Forrest. She has a 4.0 GPA and plans to attend Christopher Newport University. The representative for the Robinson Memorial scholarship is Audrey Robinson.
