James “Jim” Carl Dumminger, 73, died peacefully Friday, March 8, at UVA Hospital surrounded by family. He was born April 5, 1950 in Fremont, Ohio, to the late Carl Filbert and Marian Fisher Dumminger.

Besides parents he was predeceased by sister, Elizabeth Eshleman and special uncle, Fr. Urban Dumminger.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 46 years, LouAnn; sons, James (Jacki) Carl Jr. and Timothy (Monica) Carlton; granddaughter, Naomi Rose Dumminger; sisters-in-law, Liese (Michael) Wells, Lynn (Robin) Dickerson and Laura (Craig) Parody; brothers-in-law, Louis Wunnenberg Jr., John Wunnenberg II and Richard Eshleman; and many much-loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Graduating from St. Joseph College in 1970, he earned advanced degrees from Longwood College, University of Virginia and Virginia Tech (Ed.D.). Jim began a 42-year career in education in 1971 in Prince Edward County Public Schools as a high school math teacher, math coordinator and high school assistant principal. After moves to Surry and Westmoreland County Public Schools in elementary and junior high administration, he returned to Prince Edward County and continued his career in Buckingham as an elementary and central office administrator, retiring as assistant superintendent.

Never able to sit still, in “retirement”, Jim served as a Seasonal Ranger for the Division of Education and Visitor Services, at Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park for 10 years and on the Prince Edward County School Board.

Dumminger was an active 40+ year member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. An Eagle Scout, he worked with Boy Scouts of America troops 6516 and 6596. Jim had served on many educational boards, as president of the regional chapter of Phi Kappa Phi and member of Farmville Jaycees. He perennially cheered on Buckingham County Public Schools, Prince Edward Farmville Youth Association and Prince Edward County Public Schools sports. He was an avid supporter of all teams Virginia Tech (VT) and could be found on frequent road trips with sons and friends! He loved wearing VT gear to his UVA appointments. He looked forward to spending time with granddaughter, Naomi.

A funeral service will be held at St. Theresa Church in Farmville on Saturday, April 6, at 11 a.m. with reception to follow. Interment will be at a later date in Old Town Cemetery in Lynchburg.
