Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I just wanted to take some time and celebrate the Hampden-Sydney Tigers for their achievements this year. Those of us following along on Saturday saw them come so close to winning a national title. That’s insanely difficult, just to be in that position. But this year had so much more for the Tigers, including setting a new record for most wins in a season and they brought home an ODAC championship.

I was happy to see that, especially for the seniors. And wow, what a ride. To not just win, but have the chance to host portions of the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, that’s amazing. And what does that do for this region? All of those people, those families of players and fans had to stay somewhere, so that’s hotel rooms bought. They all had to eat, so that’s restaurants paid. And if their wives are anything like mine, there’s a real good chance they went through every shop in and around downtown Farmville while they were here, adding to the economy that way.

And then from the pure competition aspect of it all, Hampden-Sydney had one of its best seasons in history. For so much of this basketball season, they were ranked either No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 in the nation. That’s a team from right here in this area, sitting on top the rankings as best in the nation for that point in time. Again, all this from a team based out of Prince Edward County and representing all of us around the region.

I don’t think we fully grasp sometimes just the sheer effort, the work that goes into being such a good team. These players and coaches put in a ton of time, dedication and sacrifice to make it all happen. I just want to say we appreciate your efforts and that we’re all proud of the way you’ve represented this region.
