Freshman Mo Wumpini scored two goals to lead the Hampden-Sydney Tigers soccer team to a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Ferrum College Saturday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

“Good response by the guys tonight to keep a clean sheet and earn three important ODAC points,” said head coach Tommy DiNuzzo. “Ferrum made the game very difficult on us but thankfully we were able to hold on at the end.”

In the 25th minute, Wumpini struck for the first time, as junior Justin Varela hit a long ball over the top of the defense for sophomore Drew Miller to run on to. Miller then pushed the ball onto the run of Wumpini with the outside of his right foot, before Wumpini took care of the rest and gave H-SC a one-goal lead.

It took until the 87th minute for the Tigers to double their lead, as sophomore Michael Farmer pounced onto a throw in from the Panthers and cleared it up the field, where Wumpini pounced onto the ball before any Panther could get a touch on it and pushed it past a charging goalie.

Sophomore Garrett Hodges got his second win of the season, making one save and getting his first career shutout.

H-SC was outshot on the night 14 to 11 but put more shots on target than Ferrum (4-1).

The Hampden-Sydney Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 11 when they travel to Shenandoah to take on the Hornets. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Shentel Stadium.
