According to a release from the school, Tillett is currently a special education lead teacher and instructional coach for Powhatan County Public Schools, and was a former special education teacher and administrator for Cumberland County Public Schools. She has expertise in the co-teaching model, in using disaggregated student data and in conflict resolution.

“I believe in a humanistic approach to teaching and administration,” Tillett was quoted as saying in the release. “People must know that they are cared for and valued in order to be motivated.”

Tillett received her Bachelor of Science degree in social work from Longwood University, her teaching endorsement in special education from Old Dominion University and her Masters of Science degree in administration and supervision from Longwood University. She is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education in special education Pre-K-12 and administration and supervision K-12.

Formerly, she was a corrections institute rehabilitation counselor for the Dillwyn Correctional Center. The release noted she will officially assume her new position July 1.

Tillett’s resignation as a member of the School Board will leave a vacancy on the board. According to a previous release, the Cumberland County school board is currently accepting letters of interest and résumés for the position of interim school board member.

Anyone interested in the position must be a qualified voter who resides in Voting District 4. All letters and résumés should be faxed to Dr. Elizabeth Jamerson at (804) 492-9869 or mailed to Cumberland County Public Schools, P.O. Box 170, Cumberland, VA 23040. All letters and résumés should be received by June 23.

A public hearing on the selection of a candidate will be held July 2 during the regular school board meeting, which will be held virtually. Names of applicants will be posted on the school website prior to the hearing. The link to the virtual Zoom meeting will be posted on the school website on the day of the hearing.
