Dear Editor:
One thought and a suggestion –
1) Let us remember that our Confederate statue is not in memory of a rich, slave-owning plantation aristocrat. It is in memory of the dirt-poor Virginians who left their small farms and shops to fight in the trenches against an invading army that burned and destroyed their homes on its march south. Many of those boys may not have fully understood the constitutional or moral issues the two sides were fighting about; they knew only that they had to protect their homes and families. Northern boys would have done the same.
2) Rather than removing any monument, we should perhaps consider erecting additional monuments to those other outstanding local citizens of different persuasions and accomplishments whom we can all admire, if not agree with. What a beautiful town it would be.
