Longwood University’s softball faced some formidable competition over the weekend at the Bubly Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, and finished with a 1-4 record after playing two games Friday, Feb. 14, two games Saturday, Feb. 15, and a final contest Sunday, Feb. 16.
North Dakota State University, the 2019 Summit League Champion, had an offense that exploded for eight runs, on 13 hits, including a three-hit performance from Stephanie Soriano to lead the Bison to an 8-2 victory over Longwood in the final game of the Bubly Invitational Sunday.
Day two of the Bubly Invitational, Saturday, was not as kind to Longwood as the first day. The Lancers and 2019 Women’s College World Series participant and No. 8 University of Florida opened the day with a rematch from the night before, with the Gators getting the best of the Lancers, 11-0. Game two of the day for Longwood saw Southeastern Louisiana University use a four-run second inning, leading to a 6-1 victory over the Lancers.
Longwood’s gauntlet of non-conference games that features six power five schools began Friday. The Lancers started the Bubly Invitation with an offensive showing that powered them to an 8-0 victory over Florida A&M University.
Longwood then fell victim to Florida in the nightcap, 9-0.
The Lancers (3-6) begin play in the University of Central Florida Invitational Friday, Feb. 28, at 11:30 a.m. in Orlando, Florida.
