Editor:

It is time for us to become proactive and save our state from environmental destruction by contacting state politicians to make changes in environmental laws.

It is time for us to stand up for ourselves and future generations.

Currently there are two bills before the Virginia General Assembly — Senate Bill (SB) 409 and House Bill (HB) 1038 addressing environmental issues. SB409 Local Impact from Large Landfills and HB 1038 Solid Waste Management Facility require updates to Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulations. Updates to the DEQ regulations would affect the approval process for projects such as the proposed mega-landfill in Cumberland County, a 1200-acre project accepting garbage from over a 500-mile aerial area – Canada to Florida, Virginia Beach to Kentucky.

Virginia’s DEQ requirements are at least 20 years old. Isn’t it time to make changes and protect our beautiful State, our environment, our natural resources such as ground and surface water? If you answered yes, then it is time for you to contact not only your Virginia senator and delegate, but all members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources and all members of the House Committee on Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources and let them know you support SB409 and HB1038.
