Serendipity Club meeting

Jimmy Hurt, left, president of the Farmville-Prince Edward Historical Society, talks to Lee Scott, right, president of the Serendipity Club, on Nov. 14. Hurt presented a program on “Clawson Furniture” and the Clawson Furniture Company that operated in Farmville from 1945-71. Mr. Clawson and his staff of craftsmen made solid wood furniture in traditional styles including beds, dressers, chests of drawers, dining room tables and chairs, corner cupboards, desks, grandfather clocks, small tables and much more. Many of the ladies in the club own pieces of Clawson furniture, so it was an especially interesting program. Hurt told the group that you can still find Clawson furniture at local antique shops and occasionally at local auctions. Hurt is a wealth of information on local history, especially old businesses that operated in Farmville.
