Prince Edward County High School (PECHS) now offers free breakfast to all students.

Free meals for students are a familiar concept for Prince Edward students, who already benefit from this service at both the elementary and middle schools; however, free breakfast at PECHS is a new development.

Free breakfast at PECHS is the product of a Provision 2 initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, and it seeks to streamline the operation of meal programs and offer free meals to students.

Research from the Food Research and Action Center shows that children who eat school meals have more nutritious diets than children who don’t, regardless of income level, better nutrition leads to better academic performance, behavior and learning environments, and providing school meals at no charge promotes the value of good nutrition to all students.

“All children deserve to begin their day with a healthy and delicious meal, and now we can ensure that our students all have that opportunity,” says PECPS Food Service Supervisor Bruce Davis.
