Prince Edward County High School’s varsity football team continued a difficult start to the 2019 season in its second game, experiencing another shutout Friday when it fell 35-0 to host Altavista Combined School.

The Eagles opened the season Aug. 30 with a 53-0 loss to visiting King William High School.

Following Friday’s game against the Colonels, Prince Edward Head Coach Larry White said, “Still got a lot of work.”

He took a moment to assert the positives going on within the program, though.

“Overall, the kids, they’re doing well,” he said. “… The kids are working hard.”

But the Altavista game highlighted what is leading to poor results for the Eagles in games.

“We’re making a lot of mistakes,” White said. “I’m not going to make any excuses. We just made a lot of mistakes during that game.”

White said there were two or three Prince Edward turnovers and poor tackling, at times, on defense, but he concisely summarized what kind of mistakes his squad is making.

“On offense and defense, we’re just missing assignments,” he said.

Despite the loss, there were Eagles standouts.

“Justin Sprague did a real good job as far as offensive-wise,” White said, as Sprague recorded two catches for 60 yards. “He stepped in because Saybien Peterson got hurt.”

The coach noted that Peterson’s ankle was stepped on during the game.

“I should have him back soon,” White said. “He’s questionable for Friday.”

Sophomore quarterback Nate Reed finished with 25 carries for 94 yards and went 5-for-13 passing for 89 yards and one interception.

Junior linebacker De’Murie Banks gave a good defensive performance, White said, adding that Banks recorded 15 tackles.

Senior linebacker T.J. Williams added 11 tackles.

The Eagles (0-2) visit Randolph-Henry High School on Friday at 7 p.m.
