Area swimmers shine in FAST meet

The Farmville Area Swim Team (FAST) recently held a swim meet at Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) Kirby Field House in Leggett Pool.

Patsy Watson noted that FAST is a collaborative program with Fuqua School, the H-SC Rec Center and the Southside Virginia Family YMCA.

Each group fielded a team at the recent meet, with the H-SC Rec Center defeating Fuqua 405-371 and topping YMCA 395-189. Fuqua beat YMCA 361-191.

In the 100-meter medley relay event, H-SC Rec Center won with a team that featured Ric Marmorstein, Julia Belle Bennett, Aviva Bloom and James Caddell.

Fuqua won the 200-meter freestyle relay with the team of Alan Coro, Ainsley Harris, Seth Rabon and Cole Foster.

Emerging as the victor in the 100-meter freestyle relay was the YMCA team featuring Avery Ivers, Kelly Womack, Gabrielle Boehmer and Martha Lucy Vincent.

Individually in the 13-14 age group, Fuqua’s Foster won the 50-meter backstroke and the 50-meter freestyle.

In the 12-and-younger group, Ivers, of YMCA, won the 50-meter backstroke, the 50-meter breaststroke and the 50-meter freestyle. Bennett, of H-SC Rec Center, won the 50-meter butterfly, and she won the 100-meter freestyle in a mixed age group.

Fuqua’s Russell Foster earned first in the 25-meter backstroke in the 11-year-old division.

In the 10-year-old group, Bloom, of H-SC Rec Center, won the 25-meter butterfly and the 25-meter backstroke, and Caddell, also of H-SC Rec Center, won the 25-meter freestyle and the boys 25-meter backstroke.

The 9-year-old category featured Marmorstein, of H-SC Rec Center, winning the 25-meter freestyle and Fuqua’s Emma Hailey winning the 25-meter backstroke.

Rachel Coro, of Fuqua School, triumphed in the 25-meter backstroke and the 25-meter freestyle in the 8-year-old division.

In the 7-year-old category, Vincent, of the YMCA team, placed first in the 25-meter breaststroke and first in the 25-meter freestyle. Juniper Shepard, of the H-SC Rec Center squad, placed first in the 25-meter backstroke.
