Norma Jean Craddock Arrington, 83, passed away peacefully at her Farmville, Virginia home and went to meet her heavenly Father in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 1, 2019. She was born on Oct. 24, 1935, the daughter of John Thomas and Clarice Mayhew Craddock of Gretna, Va., just two years after their graduation from Climax High School in 1933.

Jean graduated from Climax in 1954 and went on to work at Nationwide Insurance in Lynchburg before getting married and moving to Farmville. On June 20, 1960, she wed her beloved husband of more than 48 years, Nason Arnold Arrington. They lived for a few years in a house “within shouting distance” of the Longwood University baseball field before buying their first — and only — home together along Farmville’s historic High Street. They shared the next half century there and raised two children. Nason preceded her in death and went to prepare her heavenly home on Nov. 17, 2008. Jean was formerly a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Farmville Volunteer Fire Department. After moving to Farmville, she worked for several years at Newman Tire Co. and later on as the office manager for Nelson’s Carpet and Tile in Keysville, Va. She is survived by a loving daughter, Cynthia Kay Arrington Duffey, and her husband, Lynn, of Keysville, Va.; a devoted son, Randal Arnold Arrington, and his wife, Pamela, of Luray, Va.; two adoring grandchildren that loved her as much as she loved them — with all their hearts, Christopher Thomas Duffey of Richmond, Va. and Eleanor Bailey Arrington of Luray, Va.; a loving brother, Douglas Craddock, and his wife, Sandra, of Gretna, Va.; her in-laws, who treated her like their own, Audrey Poore of Clarksville, Va., Walter and Florine Arrington of Charlotte Court House, Va., Peggy Matthews of West Branch, Michigan, Steve Cawthorne (and his late wife Barbara) of Lynchburg, Va.; Ronald Arrington of Charlotte Court House, Va.; and 14 nieces and nephews. She was a caring and generous woman, who never wanted to cause a moment of discomfort for anyone. She believed in her father John’s motto: “Do as much good to as many as you can, for you only walk this way once.” She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of truly knowing her gentle spirit.

A funeral service led by the Rev. Ted Smith will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 5 at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Internment will be held at Trinity Memorial Gardens following the service. Honoring her memory as pallbearers will be Chris Duffey of Richmond, Va.; Greg Craddock of Warrenton, Va.; Michael Garbee of Lynchburg, Va.; Michael Jefferson of Gretna, Va.; Darrell Arrington of Phenix, Va.; Curtis Arrington of Red House, Va.; and Todd Arrington of Red House, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Virginia, the American Heart Association or the Farmville Volunteer Fire Department.
