Tigers run past Quakers

Tigers sophomore attackman Jake O’Brien had three goals and four assists, senior captain attackman John Burke had four goals, and junior attackman Jack Hayden had two goals and two assists to lead Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) lacrosse team to a 23-14 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Guilford College on Saturday on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.

Sophomore attackman Jared Medwar added two goals and one assist for the host Tigers, who led 12-5 at halftime against the visiting Quakers, who fell to 5-6 overall and 0-5 in the ODAC.

Hampden-Sydney took a 6-2 lead through one quarter, getting a goal from O’Brien at the 12-minute, 48-second mark, one from freshman midfielder Sean Duffy at 10:08, O’Brien at 9:22, sophomore midfielder Charlie Doetzer at 7:27, Medwar at 4:15 and Hayden at 2:06. Providing assists during the opening quarter were sophomore midfielder Reilly French at 9:22, Hayden at 7:27 and 4:15, and O’Brien at 2:06.

The Tigers outscored the Quakers 6-3 in the second quarter to lead 12-5 at the intermission.

Scoring goals were sophomore midfielder Davis Hatch at 12:28, Burke at 6:49, 6:06, 1:54 and 0:14, and Medwar at 2:47. Assists went to O’Brien at 12:28 and 2:47, Reilly French at 6:49 and Duffy at 0:14.

H-SC took a 9-3 advantage in goals during the third quarter to take a commanding 21-8 lead through 45 minutes.

Scoring goals were Doetzer at 13:34, freshman attackman Bobby Clagett at 13:09, O’Brien at 12:39, Hayden at 12:31, junior midfielder George Marshall at 11:16, freshman midfielder Aidan Byrne at 9:55, freshman attackman Drane Garven at 7:37, senior attackman Seamus Byrne at 6:17 and freshman attackman Brooks Waskey at 1:26, for his first collegiate goal. Adding assists during the quarter were Medwar at 13:34, O’Brien at 13:09, freshman midfielder Max Koontz at 12:31 and 11:16, Seamus Byrne at 9:55, to his younger brother, Aidan, and freshman midfielder Marshall Flagg at 6:17.

The Quakers managed to outscore the Tigers 6-2 in the fourth quarter to provide for H-SC’s final nine-goal margin of victory. Scoring for the hosts in the final quarter were Marshall at 11:28 and freshman midfielder Billy French, formerly of Fuqua School, at 11:02. Both goals were unassisted.

Hampden-Sydney junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri started and played the first 35 minutes, 51 seconds, yielding six goals while making six saves. Sophomore keeper William Schlager played the next 9:09, allowing two goals with two saves. Senior keeper Nick Steen played the final 15:00, allowing six goals with two saves.

Tigers sophomore midfielder Jake Brummett was 15-20 on faceoffs and collected eight ground balls. Freshman midfielder Presley Miller was 6-8 on faceoffs, and sophomore midfielder Michael Thornton, formerly of Fuqua, was 4-6 on faceoffs. Senior defenseman Anton Kheirani added six ground balls.

Hampden-Sydney (7-3, 2-1 ODAC) is scheduled to play again on the road at ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
