On Saturday, May 18, the monthly Buckingham Gardening Tips and Topics session will explore gardening in containers. Master Gardeners Kelly Love-Schwarz and Jackie Fairbarns will discuss the selection of suitable containers, planting mixes especially for containers, types of gardens that thrive in containers, selection of specific plants for containers and the care and feeding of container gardens.

The Master Gardeners note that growing a vegetable garden in a container is very different from growing a cactus or succulent garden in a container. They suggest that almost any plant can be grown in a container if the plants’ basic needs are met. For example, a flowering garden requires full sun, while a container of salad greens will do better with some shade. The session will help attendees design a container garden that will meet esthetic as well as nutritional goals.

Everyone is welcome to attend these free sessions at the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office, 54 Administration Lane, Buckingham (across the street from Maysville Baptist Church in the white AG building.) Reservations are not required. The presentation begins at 10 a.m. and lasts about an hour. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer gardening questions from 9:30-11:30 a.m. These monthly sessions are sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service and presented by the Heart of Virginia Master Gardeners Association.
