Coming together to make a difference

Each year the Farmville Police Department participates in Operation Blue Christmas in conjunction with the Department of Social Services (DSS). Ten children in need, identified by DSS participate in the event. Officers take the children to shop for Christmas gifts and necessities and then share a lunch. Funds for the event are raised and or donated by area community organizations, businesses and individuals.

According to Farmville Police Officer Jeff Harris this year there were 11 children in the program. Harris stated, someone mentioned that two of the selected siblings actually had a third sibling that was faced with health challenges and wasn’t included. Although the budget was set up for 10 children, Harris noted that with the generous support from the community and organizations like the Farmville Rotary Club they were able to help the additional child. Accepting a certificate of appreciation from Harris is Farmville Rotarian Cannon Watson.

We commend the Farmville Police Department, the Farmville Rotary Club and others for their support of Operation Blue Christmas and making a difference in area children’s lives. (Send “Way to Go!” photos with a description and names to WayToGo@FarmvilleHerald.com).
